Pain or pleasure?

It seems that everybody do not like SHUTTER ISLAND. Here’s why I disagree:

When Leo knows that he is being infused in an experimental role play therapy, he lied to the doctor that it went successful so he can proceed to be lobotomized. At the ending he asks, “Is it worse to live as a monster or die a good man?” Darn, if you–the audience–don’t get it, he meant that he’d rather forget the pain of losing his family (that’s why he wanted to do the lobotomy) than live in the trauma and suffering of a cured man.
